Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)
A specialized ultrasound imaging procedure that provides highly detailed views of your heart's structure and function from inside the esophagus.
What is a TEE?
A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is a specialized type of echocardiogram that produces exceptionally clear images of your heart. Unlike a standard echocardiogram performed on your chest, a TEE uses a small ultrasound probe passed through your mouth into your esophagus — the tube connecting your throat to your stomach.
Because the esophagus sits directly behind the heart, the TEE probe can capture detailed images without interference from the lungs, ribs, or chest wall. This makes TEE particularly valuable for examining structures that are difficult to see with standard echocardiography, such as the left atrial appendage, heart valves, and the aorta.
When is a TEE Recommended?
Dr. Bleszynski may recommend a TEE to:
- Check for blood clots in the heart before cardioversion or ablation procedures
- Evaluate heart valve disease in greater detail
- Guide catheter-based procedures like MitraClip and Watchman
- Assess the heart for sources of stroke or blood clots
- Examine the aorta for aneurysms, dissections, or other abnormalities
- Detect infections of the heart valves (endocarditis)
- Monitor heart function during cardiac surgery
What to Expect During the Procedure
Preparation
You'll need to fast for at least 6 hours before the procedure. An IV will be placed to administer sedation medication, and your throat will be numbed with a spray or gel.
Sedation
You'll receive medication through the IV to help you relax and feel drowsy. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
Probe Insertion
While you're sedated, the thin, flexible TEE probe is gently guided through your mouth and into your esophagus. You may feel some pressure but should not feel pain.
Imaging
The probe transmits ultrasound waves that create detailed real-time images of your heart. Dr. Bleszynski will examine various structures from different angles.
Completion
Once all necessary images are obtained, the probe is removed. The entire imaging portion typically takes 15-30 minutes.
Recovery & Aftercare
After the procedure, you'll rest in a recovery area while the sedation wears off. Here's what to expect:
- •You'll be monitored for about 30-60 minutes until you're fully awake
- •Your throat may feel sore or scratchy for a few hours — this is normal
- •Avoid eating or drinking until the numbness in your throat wears off (usually 1-2 hours)
- •You'll need someone to drive you home due to the sedation
- •Most patients can resume normal activities the next day
TEE-Guided Procedures
TEE plays a critical role in guiding many structural heart procedures that Dr. Bleszynski performs. The real-time imaging allows precise positioning of devices and immediate assessment of results. TEE is routinely used during:
